Those snuggly first days...
For me, winter is cozy season. Snowy days at home with a cup of coffee, a book and a roaring fire is my perfect winter day. Photographing a newborn is another cozy endeavor for me. The first few weeks at home with a new baby is such a special time for a family. Feedings and sleepless nights and diapers changes and bonding and love fill your days and nights. On a cold, winter day this January I had the pleasure of capturing a newly expanded family at their home in the Metrowest area of Boston. I had photographed their maternity shoot in November and was eagerly anticipating their baby's arrival and this newborn session. Their beautiful baby boy, R, has joined a big sister, W, and their sibling bond is readily apparent. W slid into the roll of big sister so naturally and baby R is so lucky to have her to help him navigate the world. W was so excited to hold baby R and pose for photos with him. Her pride and love was beaming. Mom and dad are gems of humans and their love for each other and their beautiful family is evident in everything they do right down to the homemade bread they make daily and sent me home with. Have I mentioned lately how much I love my clients?
For me, the purpose of newborn portraits is to document your authentic, true family life in your home environment. I offer lifestyle newborn shoots and not super posed, tightly wrapped newborn portrait sessions. Lifestyle baby photos are all about being relaxed at home and documenting your real family life. I will be joining your in your home for a lifestyle newborn session but please do NOT stress about cleaning up your home before I get there. I typically only shoot in three rooms- the family room/living space, the nursery and the parent's bedroom for those full family cuddle shots. Feel free to pick up those spaces before I get there but don't go crazy. If there is anything in a spot that I want removed, I will move it aside! When I arrive, we will also check for any rooms with great lighting for the baby's close up shots. These portrait type photos are very close up and include only the baby so chaos can abound in that room and it will never be captured. I am a mom and I know how difficult those first days can be to fit in a meal and showers so please don't stress on my account. It is far more important to me that you are all relaxed and calm for your shoot than a spotless house.
During a lifestyle newborn shoot, I will spend a lot of time documenting you with your baby in their nursery. All of the details you spent hours picking out including the crib, the rocker, the theme, the mobile are memories you will want to hold onto forever. Also, I love to get photos of the family snuggly and rocking the baby like they do when the camera is gone. Long after the nursery is packed away and the perfectly curated outfits have turned into hoodies and sweats of a teenager, your newborn photos will live on as a reminder of this special time in your life.
